Early this September, Art Ducko had the pleasure to attend Rose City Comic Con with the University of Oregon. Over the course of the convention we were able to talk to a lot of people, and when I was on break I was able to capture some amazing cosplayers. Here are my some of my favorite costumes, and some information on the comics the characters appear in.
1. Han Solo in Carbonite
Although Star Wars characters are often cosplayed at any comic convention, one rarely has the opportunity to run into Jubba the Hutt’s favorite trophy: Han Solo frozen in carbonite. But, you can see more of this character in the comic series “Han Solo” (2016) by Marjorie Liu, or in the “Star Wars” (2015) comic by Jason Aaron.
2. The DC Comics Bombshells
Hate Nazis and fascism? So do these lovely ladies! You can read more about their adventures during World War II in “DC Comic Bombshells” (2015) and “Bombshells United” (2017) by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage. Characters left to right are Zatanna, Batgirl, Supergirl, Poison Ivy, and Wonder Woman.
3. Rainbow Quartz
The colorful fusion between Pearl and Rose Quartz in the show “Steven Universe.” You can see more of the Steven’s adventures and characters from the cartoon in the “Steven Universe” (2014) comic series by Jeremy Sorese.
4. The Doctor
With the show “Doctor Who” spanning the course of several decades, it comes to no surprise that the “Doctor Who” comics also span from the 1960s to the present. Currently, the latest series “The Thirteenth Doctor” (2018) by Jody Houser takes a look at the thirteenth, and first female, Doctor. The Tenth Doctor is pictured below.
5. The Guardians of the Galaxy
This family cosplay is a wonderful rendition of the modern Guardians from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy were first introduced in 1969, but they received their own comic series in 1990.
6. Sailor Moon
Our favorite tennis ball head, and the other Sailor Scouts can be found in the “Sailor Moon” (1991) manga written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi.
7. Dipper and Mabel Pines
The Pines Twins are most recognizable from the “Gravity Falls” cartoon, but in 2018 creator Alex Hirsch wrote four new adventures that take place after the tv series’ second season. See Dipper, Mabel, Waddles, and the Gruncles get into more supernatural Oregon adventures.
8. Onion, Yellowtail, and Vidalia
Another cosplay from the “Steven Universe” series, the Onion family are some of the most interesting residents of Beach City. This Onion even has a Ranger Guy, how adorable!
9. Iceman and Nightcrawler
I saw several members of Marvel’s X-Men, but this Iceman and Nightcrawler were too cool. The “X-Men” comics were first introduced in 1963, and ran off and on throughout the decades. Now the series has several spin-off comics for characters like Storm and Wolverine.
10. Queen Butterfly
Lastly, and possibly my favorite cosplay from this year’s con, is Queen Butterfly! She can be seen in the “Star vs. The Forces of Evil” cartoon series or comic series, which was published in 2016 by Disney Comics.
